TOOL Evaluate Reflection for Capstone

The final QUEST! The evaluate skill! Evaluation is a time to reflect and expand on what we have learned.  Evaluations give us the opportunity to grow and learn from our experiences.
During the Quality feedback quest, I had the opportunity to learn what quality feedback is.  We often gravitate towards easy feedback, like "good job" or "way to go".  During this quest, I learned that it is important to be specific with what I think is a "good" response.  I also took a concept from the lesson and reinforced it in the feedback. Quality feedback is feedback that provides details about the assignment and reinforces the concept being taught.
The summative assessment discussed validity, reliability and security.  All three of these areas are important to a quality LMS.  Having assessments that are valid and come from the course material is important.  Ensuring that we are testing and evaluating students over the material that we are teaching is the only way to measure what we are trying to teach.  Reliability gives us the option to gather feedback on assessments.  This provides us the opportunity to see if we are assessing what our course is set up to teach.  Finally, security is address.  Setting up an assessment system where the integrity of our system is kept and also provides a fair opportunity for evaluation is vital.
Data driven instruction, analytics and reporting is in my opinion the backbone of a quality LMS.  The enrollment and attendance, communication and analytics are all addressed and discussed in my blog.  Without the data reporting in each of these areas, the LMS would not function.  Each and everyone of these areas discussed are important to refining and expanding the quality of an LMS.
The differentiation quest provided me the opportunity to see student data on a whole.  This data allows me to take each student and evaluate where their weaknesses are.  I am able to than communicate with the student and tailor their educational needs based of the data that I have collected.  The data can show correlations between assignments and overall success.

TOOL Create Reflection for Capstone

During the Create Quest, we were guided through a series of quest that asked us to demonstrate our ability to create different documents.
During the Create a Content Map, I choose to create a content map for teacher the Food Guide Pyramid.  The quest allowed me to organize my thoughts and provided me a base for teaching this skill.  I enjoyed the content mapping.  It allowed me the opportunity to explore different concepts I wanted to cover while teaching the Food guide pyramid.  I will use content mapping in the future, it is a good way for me to organize my thoughts and provides a way for me to be sure I have thoroughly covered a topic I am teaching.
Using Web 2.0 tools to differentiate teaching instruction.  I chose to do a screen-o-matic on a PowerPoint that I created on depression.  I think differentiation is the best way to keep students interested and engaged.  I like interactive videos and I think it provides a level of interaction that is simple but yet engaging.  It also gives the virtual class a more personal touch.
During the locating resources quest I learned about Creative Commons and using resources that are free to use in my classroom.  I am relieved to finally know what I can and can not use in my classroom.  I think locating resources that are informative and free to use are important to teachers when we are trying to direct our students to resources outside of the LMS.  This quest gave me the confidence that I need to provide those resources.
Principles of Building Portable Learning Objects was a quest I really enjoyed.  I like that there are resources available to be to use and enhance and check my students knowledge.  What I like most about this quest is I got to explore resources that can really build on my teaching techniques.  I like that I have control of the content that I import into these systems.  I can design reviews for my students that are content specific and focus in on skills that they may need reinforcement with.

TOOL Communicate Reflection for Capstone

The communicate quest was informative and allowed me to explore a variety of was to stay connected with students and parents.  Of all of the quest, I enjoyed this quest the most.  I enjoyed seeing all of the different resources available for me to utilize that will make my communication more effective and engaging.
During the first quest, Definitions of Communication, I was instructed to watch a video by Sherry Turkle's.  This video was engaging and the speaker discussed how our usage of texting and staying connected could turn into a false sense of "togetherness".  I think we the majority of people depend on the connections made through text and social media than they do the face to face interactions.  I enjoyed this speaker and I think all of us should stay digitally connected, but set limits to how we engage digitally.
The News Quest provided me a time to think about what I am posting for my students.  I was able to reflect on my style and intention.  The news feed can be so beneficial to the students, but it can also be a distraction.  Focusing my news feed on the current topic and streamlining the news so that it is engaging and easy to follow is key.  Keeping the news, simple, interesting and informative with few distractions is the key to the news feed.  I enjoyed this quest, because it has challenged me to be conscious of what I am posting and how the news is perceived by my students.
Rubrics are vital to student achievement.  I learned that students not only need a rubric, but it is essential to grading equality.  The rubric allows for teacher to set their standards before the assignment is started and gives them an outline in which to grade students.  It helps the teacher provide consistency when grading between students.  The rubric is also vital to students.  The rubric allows the students to look at how their assignment will be graded and gives them a way to complete the assignment with satisfactory.  I remember being in school and not having a rubric provided.  Often teachers would give and assignment or a project and the only information we had to work with was the directions, we never had a rubric.  I think a rubric gives all participants a clear standard of what is expected.
Digital Feedback is a way for teachers to communicate what they have observed.  It gives the teacher a way to tell students why they received a grade.  It also provides a form of communication for students to know what they teachers expectations are.  Feedback allows the teacher to communicate with students and it gives the students a chance to expand on their work if it is necessary.  Feedback is also a good place for teachers to expand and provide resources for the student to continue learning.

TOOL Navigate Reflection for Capstone

During the Navigate quest, I was guided through a variety of skills I would like to highlight a few of the quest here in my final post on the Navigate quest.
Lecture Capture quest was a quest where I explored how teachers can record important skills within a digital classroom.  I think this skill is important to meeting students needs.  The ability to record a learning session and focus in on a concept that is difficult to understand can be extremely beneficial to the learning community.  Students have the ability to access the lecture at their leisure and can reference the recording when they need the reinforcement.  I think a face to face teacher would also benefit from this feature. Having references for students to listen to over and over at their leisure is providing a service to students that will enhance their learning and provide them with as much reinforcement that they desire.
The LMS tool quest, let me explore all of the possible tools within a LMS.  All of the tool are essential to the learning community.  I have found that the roll that you hold in the LMS will determine with of the tools are most important.  Some of the tools are more useful to administration while other tools are more vital to the teacher.  Since I am a teacher, I explored each of the tools that are important to me.  I listed them in my post and discussed the importance of each tool.
Tools within the LMS  can be beneficial to all participants in a learning environment.  During this quest, I provided a list of all of the tools as well as highlighting the tools I found most useful in a power point.  The take away message that I learned by doing this quest is to know what tools are available and how to incorporate each tool so that the learning environment is easy to manipulate and assist in student learning.  The tools are also vital to tracking student progress and keeping in communication with parents.
LMS Reporting was a quest where I learned that there are 4 levels of reporting for an LMS.  The 4 levels include teacher, student, course and program.  All of the reporting is important, but for me as an educator, I found the teacher and student reporting the most important.  As a teacher, I am able to see an overall success of my class.  I can see what assignments were the most and least successful.  This feature allows me to focus my teaching skills and allows me the opportunity to guide future students during the learning process.  The student reporting is vital for a teacher to look at student learning habits.  It allows the teacher to intervene if questions come up about a students achievement.  It allows the teacher to see what the student spends the most and least time on.  This feature provides essential feedback to growing and enhancing teacher and student achievement and allows for the best possible opportunity for learning.
Please explore all of my quest by visiting my Navigate page.

TOOL Participate Reflection for Capstone

The Participation quest was the very first quest that I completed.  I will reflect here on the quest and link the highlighted quest required for the capstone submission.  This quest was not only important, but essential to being the first quest.  The quest introduced participants to the digital world and how to participate responsibly within the learning community. I learned what it means to be a responsible digital citizen, my role in facilitating students to be responsible digital citizens and how to ensure a safe learning environment for everyone.  I joined a digital learning community where I can go back and explore and reference different topics and areas of interest.  I also gained the skills to what make an ideal digital leaning community.  I learned that the text, images, power points, discussions, current events, interactive videos and quizzes make up an ideal learning community
During one of the quest, I was responsible for collecting reputable digital resources.  This is vital to the learning community.  All of our references should come from a reliable source. Learning how to distinguish between reputable and non reputable resources is something everyone should be able to do in an online learning environment.
I learned the importance of being able to access the digital community and what barriers could prevent someone from accessing the digital community.  I also discussed solutions to the problem facing many of our students.
Digital resources and netiquette is also important because this sets up our learning environment for mutual respect.  This gives each online participant the comfort to speak freely but respectfully.  If everyone follows digital netiquette, than there is a sense of safety, comfort and respect that is fostered. From the language we choose to use to how we treat other learners within our community all reference netiquette.
Digital Rights and Responsibilities are essential from the beginning of any cooperative learning.  Understanding your boundaries and responsibilities is important so you can act within those boundaries.  The consequences for members should be clearly stated so there is no question as to what should happen if the rights or responsibilities are broken among members.
Digital safety and security is something we all think about, but often when we enter an online learning environment, safety my be the last thing on our mind.  This quest has highlighted the importance of having members sign AUP's and uphold them.  Having the AUP visible and referencing the AUP throughout the course can support a safe learning environment.
Lastly, digital health was something that I explored.  I am not always good about taking breaks.  I often sit down at the computer and will not get up or look away from the screen until I am finished with my task.  I focus on the work in front of me and I only take breaks once all of my work is complete.  I found this quest to be helpful. I have now tried to set task limits on myself.  Once I complete the task, I will stand up take a short break and get back to work.  I have found this to be very refreshing and often improves my quality of work.
